A traditional dessert, moong dal halwa is made from milk and yellow lentils, and has its origin set in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Due to its rich nature, it is mostly prepared in winters, especially during Diwali or other festive occasions. Moong Dal Halwa Recipe

  • 1 cup Moong Dal
  • ½ cup Milk
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • A pinch Saffron
  • ¾ cup Mawa (Khoya)
  • 1 cup Ghee
  • Dry Fruits (cashew nuts, raisins, almonds, pista - for garnishing)
  • Wash the moong dal and soak it in water for about 3-4 hours.
  • Drain the water and grind the moong dal coarsely using very little water into a fine paste.
  • Next, prepare sugar syrup by cooking sugar and ½ cup water.
  • Soak saffron in hot milk.
  • Grind mawa (khoya) into fine small pieces.
  • Heat ghee in a heavy bottomed pan and add the moong dal paste, stirring continuously over low flame till it turns brown.
  • Add sugar syrup and saffron milk. Mix well.
  • Add the mawa and continue cooking until it dissolves completely.
  • Garnish with assorted dry fruits and serve hot.
